Woman who brutalized 15-year-old girl arrested by the police

Posted on 22:37 by vikash gupta
Mrs. Ugochukwu Ebere, the guardian of a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly assaulted, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command.

It was learnt that the state’s Office of the Public Defender and Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation on Wednesday evening, went with policemen to arrest the woman at her rented apartment on Mohammed Akinje Street, in the Ejigbo area of the state. The move, it was gathered, was orchestrated by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire.

A human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has also intervened in the matter of the 15-year-old victim.

PUNCH Metroexclusively reported on Wednesday, January 21, that the primary six pupil had narrated to a Good Samaritan, identified simply as Rukayat, how her guardian flogged her on January, 11 and sprinkled pepper on the scars on her back.

It was also said that the minor declined to report the alleged assault to the police for fear of being flogged again by the woman.

She had told Rukayat, who met her while she was groaning in pain on the street, that the woman beat her on the fateful day for sending one of her daughters to bring her soap to do the dishes.

However, Ugochukwu, debunked the victim’s claim, stating that she beat her for stealing and masturbating; the latter act of which she said Amadi had started teaching her daughters.

Although the victim owned up to the allegations, she maintained that she was beaten for sending the daughter on errand.

The Director, OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, when contacted on the phone said the deputy governor had ordered the agency and WAPA to trail the guardian after reading about the report in the papers.

Rotimi, however, expressed displeasure on the ‘detention’ of the girl in police custody.

She said, “The deputy governor drew our attention to the story. My team and WAPA officials under her directive went to the Ejigbo Police Station and requested policemen. The woman was eventually arrested.

“We wanted to have the girl in our care until prosecution would start. But unfortunately, the DPO refused to release her. She is not a suspect in this matter so why should she be forced to sleep in the station?”

On his part, Falana said his chambers would petition the police and ensure that the girl gets justice. He also urged people to report cases of child abuse to appropriate authorities.

He said, “Under the law, the girl does not have to report to the police. Any human rights organisation can report and take it up on her behalf. The new fundamental rights procedure rules have turned everybody into his brother’s keeper.

“We are going to petition the police authorities so that the matter can be taken seriously and investigated with a view to bringing the culprits to book.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said neither Ugochukwu nor the girl was being detained.

He said, “Both the girl and the woman are with us under protective custody. The woman is pregnant. We are not detaining them. We are ready to work with the OPD as soon as it formally writes us to investigate the matter.”

Buhari Certificate forged - Fani-Kayode of PDP

Posted on 22:13 by vikash gupta
The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation alleged on Thursday that the school certificate presented by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was forged.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, made the allegation at a press conference in Abuja.

He, however, added that the organisation had yet to contact the school that issued the certificate to either confirm or deny its authenticity.

But when the school principal, Mr. Isyaku Bello was contacted on the telephone, he said the certificate he signed was genuine.

The principal said, “If they are doubting the result, then they should come and see the authentic copy and not the photocopy sent to us by the Cambridge West Africa School.

“We are here waiting for anybody doubting what we have sent out. We are not running away. Let them come and found out. “

Nevertheless, Fani-Kayode still insisted that the document, which were released by the Ministry of Education, Katsina State and the University of Cambridge, was fraudulently procured.

He said those who authored the result must be arrested by the police and be prosecuted.

He said, “Our conclusion from all these is that the document purportedly released by the Government College (Pilot) Katsina, upon which the APC presidential candidate hopes to bury the doubt about his eligibility for next month’s election is forged, manipulated and fraudulently procured. It is therefore untenable in fact and in law.

“We do not know who the authors and masterminds of this forgery are but whoever they are, we urge them to come forward and be identified.

“If they fail to come forward voluntarily, we hereby call on the police and other security agencies to seek them out, find them, arrest them, interrogate them and prosecute them, in accordance with the laws of the land.”

Fani-Kayode also called on Buhari to submit himself to the police to answer charges of perjury, alleging that the former Head of State lied on oath about his academic qualification.

This, he said, was what a man who “claims to represent integrity and due process ought to do in this situation.”

He said there was no way that Buhari could extricate himself from the crisis, adding that the more he tried “to extricate himself, the more he stumbles into a new phase in the unfolding narrative of his obvious complicity in a matter that he claimed borders on perjury.”

He said having carefully studied the statement of result as signed by the “school principal” and an “examination officer” of the Government College, Katsina, as well as the attached document titled, ‘University of Cambridge West Africa School Certificate 1961’, his campaign organisation believed that the result was not genuine.

He raised the following observations and comments on the document.

The former Minister of Information said, “The result sheet which was attributed to the Cambridge examination body is clearly a super imposition of one document on another, as you will shortly see in the enlarged image of the result sheet as published. The column lines on the part where names are printed do not align with the blank columns while there is an introduction of extraneous lines on some other columns.

“The document contains an obvious alteration on the Mathematics column of the candidate, Mohamed Buhari, who was assumed to have scored an ‘F’ in the subject. This raises a very fundamental issue of validity in view of the fact that the accompanying result sheet states that ‘any alteration or erasure renders this statement of result invalid.’

“This is the standard practice in all interpretation of documents, especially academic records. The question we put to Gen. Buhari and his party is whether this alteration was done by the University of Cambridge.

Asked if his organisation has made any request to verify the authenticity of the documents, he said no.

Nigeria records 100,000 new cancer cases annually - Ajekigbe

Posted on 21:54 by vikash gupta
A professor of radiotherapy and oncology with the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Akoka, Aderemi Ajekigbe, has said that Nigeria records 100,000 new cases of cancer every year.

Ajekigbe, who delivered the 21st inaugural lecture of UNILAG on Thursday titled ‘’Cancer. The Unwanted Guest’’, said that Nigeria at the moment had about two million recorded cases of cancer.

According to the professor, the incidence of cancer is increasing at an alarming rate in developing countries like Nigeria due to the poor state of health facilities, poor funding of cancer care, late diagnosis and detection of the deadly disease.

Ajekigbe called on the Federal Government to address the increasing number of Nigerians dying from cancer due to poor access to treatment and funds needed to manage the disease.

He said, “The global incidence of cancer is soaring but cancer cases are worse and death rates are higher in Nigeria because cancer patients are usually poor and they have little access to treatment in the country.

“ At every time, there are only four functioning radiotherapy machines in the country, others may have broken down due to the high patient load on it.

“ Patients who can afford it will travel out when they can no longer wait for the machines to start working while the poor patients suffer in silence.

“Even most of the patients who can afford to treat their cancer abroad come back in body bags. That is why we need to have our own facilities that will enable us screen, detect and treat cancer cases early.

“We cannot afford to lose more Nigerians to cancer. Government should dedicate the proceeds from an oil block to the provision of cancer equipment and treatment. It is a need.” The oncologist, who defined cancer as an abnormal and uncontrolled growth that persists in the body, said women had a higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer when compared to men.

“More than 40 per cent of cancer occurs in women. Breast and cervical cancer are the commonest forms of cancer and they occur in women. That is why every woman should examine her breast regularly. Cancer can happen to anyone but it does not have to be a death sentence if it is detected early.”

Saudi Arabia King Abdullah dies at age 90

Posted on 21:42 by vikash gupta
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, the powerful U.S. ally who fought against al-Qaida and sought to modernize the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom, including by nudging open greater opportunities for women, has died. He was 90.

A royal court statement said the king died at 1 a.m. early this morning. His successor was announced as 79-year-old half-brother, Prince Salman, according to the statement carried on the Saudi Press Agency. Salman was Abdullah's crown prince and had recently taken on some of the ailing king's responsibilities.

Abdullah was born in Riyadh in 1924, one of the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, King Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. Like all Abdul-Aziz's sons, Abdullah had only rudimentary education. Tall and heavyset, he felt more at home in the Nejd, the kingdom's desert heartland, riding stallions and hunting with falcons. His strict upbringing was exemplified by three days he spent in prison as a young man as punishment by his father for failing to give his seat to a visitor, a violation of Bedouin hospitality.

Abdullah was selected as crown prince in 1982 on the day his half-brother Fahd ascended to the throne. The decision was challenged by a full brother of Fahd, Prince Sultan, who wanted the title for himself. But the family eventually closed ranks behind Abdullah to prevent splits.

Abdullah became de facto ruler in 1995 when a stroke incapacitated Fahd. Abdullah was believed to have long rankled at the closeness of the alliance with the United States, and as regent he pressed Washington to withdraw the troops it had deployed in the kingdom since the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The U.S. finally did so in 2003.

NCC shut down APC SMS Presidential Campaign Fund Raising Platform

Posted on 13:59 by vikash gupta
Barely 48 hours after the Buhari-Osinbajo Presidential Campaign Fundraising Committee launched some of its platforms for raising funds, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has shutdown the Short Messaging Service (SMS) platform – 35350 – meant to encourage small donors, especially young people, to do so.

Director of the Committee and Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, had on Tuesday unveiled five platforms, including partnership with five banks for donors wishing to pay cash towards the fund, the Electronic payment platform involving logging in on the APC domain name www.apcgmbpyo.org, the Short Messaging Service with 35350, the Ring tone and the Scratch Card platforms.
However, briefing the press at the Lagos House, Marina, on Thursday, Governor Fashola announced with regrets that before the end of Tuesday after the launch of the platforms, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) had issued a letter to the telecoms operators “not to carry political messages” thereby shutting down the SMS platform.

Casper's dog escape from Jennifer Lopez's house and bit her neighbour

Posted on 12:12 by vikash gupta
According to TMZ, Casper Smart’s dog escaped from Jennifer Lopez's house and bit one of her neighbors ... leaving the woman with a broken hand.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Smart's boxer, named Bear was at JLo's home outside Los Angeles back in December ... when he got loose and clamped down on the neighbor's hand and arm.

Since the attack, Bear has been quarantined at Casper's nearby Woodland Hills home. Authorities are still trying to determine if the dog poses a danger to others.

We're told both of Casper's boxers still spend a lot of time at JLo's house ... since her kids love the dogs. It's unclear if JLo or Casper were at the house when the attack happened, but Animal Control gave Casper a citation for an unleashed dog ... since he's the owner.

ECOWAS to send 250 observers to Nigeria for next month's election

Posted on 10:28 by vikash gupta
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is to deploy a 250-strong Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Nigeria for the country’s general election.

The ECOWAS mission, one of the largest foreign observation teams being deployed in Nigeria, will be headed by former Ghanaian President John Kufuor, who led a fact-finding mission to the country last October.

An innovation this time is that the EOM, which is due in Nigeria from 10 February 2015, will be preceded by a 12-member Long-Term Election Observation Mission (LTEOM), whose members will be deployed from 22nd January to 18 February 2015

A statement from the organisation noted that while the short-term mission will concentrate on the regular observation of the electoral process, before, during and the post-election period, the LTEOM will serve as a rapid response mechanism for emergencies and contribute to the prevention and management of election related conflicts.

It stated that the members will provide credible real-time analysis and substantial recommendations and also help to create an atmosphere of public trust and encourage citizen participation.

Angry youths stones Minister and other dignitaries at PDP presidential rally in Bauchi

Posted on 10:08 by vikash gupta
There was chaos today at the Ibrahim Babangida Square, venue of the PDP presidential rally in Bauchi State as angry youths threw stones and other objects at dignitaries.

The supporters who had come to the venue with drums and placards and singing solidarity songs for the president and PDP became unruly during the programme and began pelting dignitaries on the stand.

Security operatives had a tough time dispersing the restless supporters, who had stormed the square in large in large number.

A similar incident occurred on Monday when Governor Isa Yuguda and other dignitaries were stoned at the PDP governorship campaign rally at the Darazo mini-stadium by angry youths believed to be supporters of the opposition All Progressives Congress.

The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, was pelted with bottled and sachet water while he was making his speech and pleading with the people of the state to vote for and support Jonathan and the PDP during next month’s general elections.

Other dignitaries, who were on the stand with the FCT minister while he was making his speech, were also stoned. Others bent down to avoid being hit by any of the missiles.

The minister paused for some seconds to wipe off water from his face.

Mohammed called on the President and other dignitaries to ignore the ugly turn of events, alleging that it was the handwork of the opposition.
